Citing "extremely dry weather conditions," the Yancey County Fire Marshal and Emergency Management Office have issued a local burn ban, effective immediately and until further notice. This critical measure is designed to reduce the risk of wildfires and protect public safety throughout the county.
The immediate restriction imposes a strict limit on all open burning activities:
No open burning is permitted within 100 feet of any structure.
While the 100-foot rule is now mandatory, officials are strongly discouraging all outdoor burning, regardless of location, until the current dry conditions improve.
"This measure is necessary to reduce the risk of wildfires and protect public safety," a statement from the Fire Marshal's Office read. "We ask all residents to halt any open burning activities until further notice. Your cooperation is essential to prevent fire hazards during this period of heightened risk."
Enforcement and Penalties
The Yancey County Sheriff's Office reminds residents that compliance with the burn ban is mandatory. Violators may be subject to fines and enforcement actions by the Fire Marshal’s Office.
