Woodfin -- October 21, 2026: Taylor’s Wave is now open for recreational use on the French Broad River after Woodfin officials announced the completion of in-river construction and lifted the town’s “Stay out of Water” advisory.

The whitewater feature at Riverside Park along Riverside Drive offers a standing wave for river surfing and freestyle kayaking. A grand opening celebration is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 23.

Visitors should expect occasional interruptions in access. Town officials said temporary closures may be necessary over the next several months while crews make adjustments intended to improve the wave’s performance.

The project honors Taylor Hunt, the son of Marc Hunt, who lost his life in a whitewater accident.

Construction started in summer 2024, but work stopped that September when Hurricane Helene struck the region. The opening marks a milestone for the recreation project following that disruption.

The wave is intended for intermediate and advanced paddlers and surfers, with its difficulty changing as river levels fluctuate. Users should assess conditions, wear appropriate safety equipment and check town notices before visiting.

Although the river feature is open, work on the larger Riverside Park project is continuing.
