Asheville -- July 19, 2026: Two people were killed and seven others were injured in a mass shooting early Sunday morning in downtown Asheville, prompting a homicide investigation by the Asheville Police Department.
Police responded to reports of multiple gunshots around 2:20 a.m. in the 250 block of Biltmore Avenue. When officers arrived, they found several people suffering from gunshot wounds.
Emergency responders, including Asheville Police officers, the Asheville Fire Department, and EMS personnel, attempted lifesaving measures. However, two victims were pronounced dead at the scene. Seven additional victims were transported to Mission Hospital for treatment. Authorities have not released information regarding the severity of their injuries or the identities of any of the victims.
Investigators quickly secured a large section of the area while detectives and forensic specialists processed the scene. According to police, numerous shell casings and other evidence were recovered as part of the investigation.
Preliminary information developed by investigators suggests the shooting may be connected to an earlier gun violence incident, although officials have not released further details about that possible link.
During the investigation, Biltmore Avenue near Short Coxe Avenue, along with portions of Short Coxe Avenue to Southside Avenue, were temporarily closed before reopening later in the morning.
The Asheville Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and is asking anyone with information to come forward.
