WNC -- April 4, 2026: Wildfire Area Update: Across North Carolina, a statewide burn ban remains in effect as fire crews struggle to contain multiple wildfires emerging throughout the region. The threat is particularly acute in Western North Carolina, where the massive volume of debris and fallen timber left behind by Hurricane Helene has created a dangerous, long-term fuel source during the traditional spring wildfire season.
To ensure the safety of ground crews and aviation assets, the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) has issued a strict request for the public to avoid fire perimeters and active roadways. Additionally, a Temporary Flight Restriction is active over fire zones; the use of drones or private aircraft is strictly prohibited.

Containment on the Wiggins Creek Fire (formerly reported as the Wiggins Fire) increased to 60% and forward progression has stopped thanks to the suppression actions taken by firefighters on the ground and with support from aircraft. The size of the fire has been adjusted to 58 acres due to more accurate mapping.
Earlier this morning, crews successfully fortified control lines which held against strong wind gusts. Firefighters are continuing to secure control lines and provide structure protection. Smoke will be visible from surrounding areas.
The fire is jointly being managed by the USDA Forest Service and North Carolina Forest Service (Unified Command). Success on the Wiggins Creek Fire is credited in part to strong interagency coordination between all local agencies. Several local fire departments are also engaged in firefighting efforts.

A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) has been implemented over the Wiggins Creek Fire area. For the safety of firefighters and aviation resources, no drones or aircraft are permitted in the area. Pilots in the area should check the NOTAMs and follow all directions for both public and firefighter safety. If you fly, we can’t!
Weather
Partly cloudy and warm conditions are forecast over the fire area for most of the day. There is a 50% chance of rain and a 30% chance of thunderstorms this afternoon. Those thunderstorms may be accompanied by gusty winds. High temperatures will hover around 75 degrees. Relative humidity levels will be near 70%.
