WNC HIgh School Football -- September 1, 2026: Week 2 of the high school football season brought another exciting weekend under the lights across Western North Carolina. From a one-point thriller in Asheville and a two-point battle involving Erwin and Mountain Heritage to big wins for Tuscola, Pisgah, Franklin, Enka and Smoky Mountain, teams across the mountains gave fans plenty to talk about. A Weekend of Close Calls and Big Wins
One of the weekend’s closest contests came in Asheville, where the Cougars edged Dobyns-Bennett of Tennessee 32-31. Erwin also found itself in a fight to the finish, holding off Mountain Heritage 30-28.
Elsewhere, several WNC teams turned in commanding performances. Enka defeated Hayesville 49-6, T.C. Roberson topped Watauga 41-14, Pisgah defeated Swain County 42-12, and Smoky Mountain rolled past Andrews 62-13.
Hendersonville made a statement with a 33-7 victory over West Henderson, while Franklin earned a 31-7 win over Robbinsville. North Buncombe came away from Rosman with a 42-30 victory, and Mitchell defeated McDowell 28-7.
Tuscola Finishes the Job Saturday
The Tuscola-Cherokee matchup took a little longer than expected to reach the final whistle. Weather interrupted Friday night’s game with the teams tied 7-7, forcing the contest to be completed Saturday.
When play resumed, Tuscola took control and pulled away for a 55-21 victory over Cherokee, putting an unusual but memorable ending on Week 2 in the mountains.
With two weeks of football now in the books, Western North Carolina teams are beginning to establish their identities, but there is plenty of football still ahead. Rivalries will intensify, conference races will begin to take shape, and every Friday night will bring another opportunity for teams across the mountains to make their mark.
