As of midday Monday, November 10, the picturesque mountain route is largely impassable from the Blowing Rock area all the way to Cherokee, including the critical commuter stretch surrounding Asheville.
Drivers heading to the scenic roadway this Monday morning were met with gates and "road closed" signs as winter weather conditions made travel unsafe. The NPS confirmed the closures are due to "inclement weather."
The National Park Service's "Road Status and Closures" page indicates extensive shutdowns across the state. The longest continuous closure spans from Milepost 355 near Mount Mitchell State Park south to Milepost 469 at the entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Further north, most areas are also closed between Milepost 285.5 in the Boone and Blowing Rock vicinity and Milepost 307, which covers the section from the Beacon Heights Overlook to Roseboro Road.
