WNC Sports -- August 3, 2026: Professional women's softball continues to gain momentum across the United States, and one of Western North Carolina's own is helping lead that rise.

Weaverville native Karlyn Pickens has quickly become one of the brightest young stars in professional softball after being selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 Athletes Unlimited Softball League (AUSL) College Draft by the Carolina Blaze. Her latest accomplishment comes with selection to the 2026 AUSL All-Star Cup, where she will compete alongside many of the league's top players.

For sports fans across Western North Carolina, Pickens represents more than individual success. Her journey from Buncombe County to the professional level highlights the growing opportunities now available in women's softball as the sport continues to expand its national audience.

A Rising Star

Before beginning her professional career, Pickens established herself as one of the nation's premier collegiate pitchers at the University of Tennessee. Known for her overpowering fastball and ability to dominate opposing hitters, she earned national recognition throughout her college career and became one of the most highly anticipated prospects entering the professional draft.

Her selection as the first overall pick by the Carolina Blaze reflected both her talent and the confidence professional teams have in her ability to become one of the league's cornerstone players.

For Western North Carolina, Pickens' success also serves as a reminder that local athletes can compete at the highest levels of their sport while inspiring the next generation of softball players throughout the region.

The Growth of Professional Women's Softball

Women's softball has experienced significant growth in recent years, fueled by record television audiences, increased attendance, expanded media coverage, and greater investment from professional sports organizations.

The Athletes Unlimited Softball League represents one of the newest chapters in that growth. The league features six city-based franchises competing throughout the season while showcasing many of the top collegiate graduates, Olympic athletes, and international stars in the sport.

North Carolina is represented by the Carolina Blaze, giving the state a professional women's softball team and providing local fans with an opportunity to follow elite-level competition much closer to home.

Major League Baseball has also supported the continued development of professional women's softball, helping increase national exposure and bringing more attention to one of America's fastest-growing sports.

What Is the AUSL All-Star Cup?

The AUSL All-Star Cup brings together many of the league's top performers for a showcase competition that celebrates the season's best talent.

Selection to the event is considered one of the league's highest honors, recognizing players who have excelled throughout the season and demonstrated exceptional performance on the field.

Pickens joins eight other Carolina Blaze players selected for this year's event, further highlighting the strength of the franchise and North Carolina's growing presence in professional softball.

Why This Matters to Western North Carolina

Western North Carolina has produced outstanding athletes across many sports, but professional softball has often received less attention than football, basketball, or baseball.

Pickens' continued success changes that conversation.

As women's sports continue attracting larger audiences and greater national investment, local athletes now have more opportunities than ever to compete professionally while inspiring young players throughout the region.

For families with daughters playing recreation, travel, or high school softball, Pickens' story demonstrates that the path from local ballfields to professional competition is becoming more visible than ever before.

Her accomplishments also place Western North Carolina in the national spotlight, giving local sports fans another hometown athlete to follow on the professional stage.

With the AUSL continuing to expand and interest in women's sports reaching record levels, Pickens' career is likely to remain one of the region's most compelling sports stories for years to come.
