Waynesville is taking steps to expand its green spaces and address urban heat issues with the creation of a new Advisory Tree Board. This initiative aims to enhance the town's tree canopy, offering benefits such as improved air quality and aesthetics for the community.
The Advisory Tree Board was established following the Town Council's adoption of a Municipal Tree Ordinance in October 2015. The board will focus on securing funding and promoting community involvement in tree-related projects.
Responsibilities of the Advisory Tree Board
The Advisory Tree Board will have several key responsibilities. These include investigating grant opportunities, developing lists of tree species suitable for planting, and fostering public awareness through educational programs. The board will also plan an annual Arbor Day event and assist the town in applying for Tree City USA recognition. Periodic reviews of the tree ordinance and management plan will also be conducted.
One of the goals of the board is to mitigate the urban heat island effect, where urban areas experience higher temperatures compared to surrounding regions. This initiative aligns with broader community development goals focused on enhancing green spaces throughout Waynesville.
Chuck Dickson, Waynesville's Town Representative for the Environmental Sustainability Board, noted the importance of the initiative, stating that increased development and paving have contributed to rising temperatures in some areas of town.
