The new documentary follows the North Carolina-based Black Box Dance Theatre as it worked with the Buncombe County VTC and local veterans during the summer of 2023.
VTC is a voluntary, court-supervised program that assists and supports U.S. Military veterans and their families and is a partnership between courts and community-based veteran services, like the Black Box Dance Theatre. The theatre and its founder Michelle Pearson use modern dance to encourage expression, healing, community, and resilience for veterans and active-duty military members and their families coping with the effects of PTSD.
“It’s nothing short of magical to watch these veterans create together,” said Buncombe County VTC Coordinator Kevin Rumley, “beginning with nothing on day one, and by week’s end performing a powerful modern dance masterpiece. In the process, they’re not just creating art; they’re healing. I’m a believer.”
