Vance Charter and Wilson Prep basketball teams brought home 1A state titles on March 11, showcasing the talent and hard work found in local high school athletic programs. For residents of Buncombe, Hendersonville, and Haywood counties, these wins are a point of pride. Vance Charter's boys team defeated Thomas Jefferson Classical 79-54, while Wilson Prep's girls team overcame ninth-seeded Robbinsville 58-44.
The baseball season is also off to an exciting start, with several local teams showing promise. North Buncombe has been particularly dominant, racking up consecutive wins that include a 16-5 victory against Owen on March 11 and a 10-0 shutout against Mountain Heritage on March 13. Polk County demonstrated its own competitive fire with a 22-12 victory over North Henderson on March 11.
In girls' soccer, A.C. Reynolds and Smoky Mountain are emerging as frontrunners. A.C. Reynolds defeated Chapel Hill 2-1 on March 13 and battled to a hard-fought 3-3 tie with Brevard earlier in the week. Meanwhile, Smoky Mountain dominated Swain County with an 8-0 victory on March 13.
The early season has also put regional track talent on display across Western North Carolina. Zeke Glaspie of Swain County made waves at the Swain County Invitational, winning the boys' 100-meter dash in a blistering 10.98 seconds. Additionally, Bailey Barrett of North Buncombe took first place in the girls' discus at the Rocket Lead Off with a dominant throw of 116-3.00.
