Asheville -- February 9, 2026: The UNC Asheville community and the wider North Carolina sports world are mourning the passing of Joel Williams, the head track and field coach for the Bulldogs, who died on Saturday, February 7, 2026, following a battle with cancer.

Williams, who dedicated nearly two decades to the university’s athletic program, was remembered by colleagues and students not just for his technical expertise, but for his profound impact as a mentor and leader.

A Legacy of Excellence in Asheville

Williams was a cornerstone of the UNC Asheville track and field program for 18 years. After serving as an assistant coach for 13 seasons, he was elevated to head coach in 2020. Under his guidance, the program reached new heights:

  • He helped lead the Bulldogs to 12 NCAA National Championship appearances.

  • Williams coached more than 100 all-conference athletes and oversaw 21 school records.

  • He notably coached Milan Ristic, a 110m hurdler who competed in the 2016 Rio Olympics and set multiple national records.

Beyond Wins and Championships

Athletic Director Janet R. Cone highlighted that Williams’ value to the university could not be measured by statistics alone. She noted that his impact on the university extended far beyond wins and records, describing him as a man of deep character who led with humility and integrity.

Williams’ coaching philosophy was rooted in building meaningful relationships. He was known as a lifelong advocate for his athletes, supporting their growth both on the track and in their personal lives.

Roots in Western North Carolina

Before his long tenure at UNC Asheville, Williams made a significant mark at Watauga High School. During his time there, the girls' track program captured three consecutive state outdoor titles and an indoor championship. His influence launched the careers of several elite athletes, including Olympian Brenda Taylor.

A 2004 graduate of Appalachian State University, Williams remained a dedicated figure in the regional sports scene throughout his life.
