WNC -- September 21, 2026: Across Western North Carolina, mountain communities are preparing to mark the two-year anniversary of Hurricane Helene this late September. Two years removed from the historic flooding, landslides, and infrastructure devastation of September 2024, towns and regional organizations across multiple counties have organized community remembrance ceremonies, recovery expos, musical benefits, and healing gatherings to honor lives lost, support neighbors still rebuilding, and celebrate Appalachian resilience.
Here is a guide to gatherings, reflection workshops, and anniversary milestones scheduled throughout the region:
Burnsville (Yancey County) — Commemorating the 2-Year Anniversary of Hurricane Helene
When: Sunday, September 27, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM
Where: Bailey Square (2 Town Square), Downtown Burnsville
Details: Hosted by the AMY Wellness Foundation, the Chief Cares Foundation, and the Town of Burnsville, this free public gathering brings the mountain community together for reflection and fellowship. The program includes remarks from Senator Ralph Hise and Dogwood Health Trust CEO Dr. Susan Mims, along with a recorded message from Eric Church’s Chief Cares Foundation. Attendees will see a special preview presentation from the creators of the Yancey-filmed documentary Scars on the Mountain and a formal recognition of Mountain Heritage High School CTE students who built tiny homes for displaced families. The afternoon also features live music by the Lesa Autrey Band and Abby Bryant, plus local food trucks and community partner booths.
Edneyville (Henderson County) — Helene Recovery Resource Fair & Community Remembrance

Details: Organized by the Disaster Recovery Partnership (DRP), this gathering serves as both a solemn remembrance and a practical aid station. Case managers, housing advocates, local contractors, and emotional wellness teams will be on hand to connect directly with homeowners, apple growers, and residents who are still navigating long-term property recovery and mitigation grants.
Black Mountain & Swannanoa Valley (Buncombe County) — Rising Appalachia Anniversary Benefit

Details: Internationally renowned roots duo Rising Appalachia returns to the Swannanoa Valley for a two-day Hurricane Helene Anniversary concert series. Asheville (Buncombe County) — Faith360 "Stronger Together" Remembrance Gathering

Details: Rather than staging large street festivals, municipal and county leaders across Haywood County are using late September public sessions to highlight major milestones achieved over the last 24 months. Updates center on completed riverbank and stream-wall repairs along the Pigeon River, safety overhauls on state and secondary rural roadways, and ongoing federal grant distributions assisting remaining displaced residents.
