Waynesville -- April 28, 2026: pickup truck crashed into and traveled through a local business on South Main Street on Sunday afternoon, April 26, after the driver suffered a medical emergency.
The Incident
The Waynesville Police Department responded to Tobacco-R-Us, located at 1841 S. Main St., in the late afternoon hours. Upon arrival, officers discovered a pickup truck that had smashed through the front of the building.
According to the police report, the driver was traveling approximately 40 mph when he suffered a medical emergency, causing the vehicle to veer right off the roadway. The momentum of the truck carried it through the storefront and across the interior of the business, finally coming to a rest just a few feet from the building’s back wall.
Damage and Aftermath
The collision resulted in significant structural and interior damage.
Estimated Damages: Police report: otal property damage is currently estimated at $20,000
Injuries: While the driver was treated for the medical emergency, no other injuries were reported inside the business at the time of the crash.
Licensing Review
Following the incident, the Waynesville Police Department confirmed that the driver will be referred to the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The agency will conduct a formal reevaluation of the driver’s medical fitness to determine if he will be eligible to retain his driver’s license.
