Understanding the Elevation Split

Air pollution behaves differently depending on your altitude. Travelers should keep these two distinct patterns in mind:

  • In the Valleys (Below 3,500 Feet): This includes downtown Asheville, Hendersonville, Waynesville, and surrounding valley communities. Fine particulate matter ($\text{PM}_{2.5}$) from regional wildfire smoke tends to settle into these low-lying areas overnight. Cool night air traps the smoke, meaning valleys often experience the haziest conditions and strongest wood-smoke smells from late night through the morning hours.

  • On the Ridge Tops (Above 4,000 Feet): This applies to the Blue Ridge Parkway, Mount Mitchell, the Great Smoky Mountains, and higher hiking trails. While you might physically climb above the morning valley smoke into clearer air, high elevations face a different challenger: ground-level ozone. As intense afternoon sunlight reacts with airborne pollutants, ozone peaks on the high ridges from mid-afternoon to early evening, creating invisible lung irritation during heavy exertion.

Practical Tips for Mountain Travelers

Because conditions fluctuate as you drive, a few quick adjustments can protect your health while on the move:

  • Plan Hikes Early: If you are heading up to the ridge lines for a strenuous hike, try to finish before the mid-afternoon hours when ozone concentrations reach their highest levels.

  • Time Your Valley Chores: If you are sensitive to smoke, wait until the late afternoon to do strenuous outdoor activities in the valleys, as the midday sun usually helps break up the trapped morning air and disperses the smoke.

  • Use Your Car’s Recirculate Button: When driving through visibly hazy mountain passes or river valleys where smoke has pooled, switch your vehicle's climate control to "recirculate" to prevent pulling outside particulates into your cabin.

  • Know Your Personal Limits: If you or your travel companions have respiratory conditions like asthma or COPD, carry quick-relief medications and be ready to lower the intensity of outdoor activities if you notice throat irritation or coughing.
