Spruce Pine -- Shelter life can be incredibly challenging for dogs, but a new initiative in Western North Carolina is looking to change that, one adventure at a time. Mitchell County Animal Rescue (MCAR) has announced the official launch of its "Trail Buddies" program, a volunteer-driven initiative designed to give adoptable dogs a much-needed break from kennel life while boosting their visibility in the community.
To celebrate, MCAR is inviting the public to a special Launch Pawty on Friday, June 26, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The free event will take place at Spruce Pine Florist, located at 111 Oak Avenue in Spruce Pine. The launch event serves as an open invitation for local animal lovers to meet the rescue team, ask questions, and sign up to become a volunteer.
The Trail Buddies program pairs volunteers with adoptable dogs for excursions outside the shelter walls. Outings can be tailored to any lifestyle, ranging from a casual stroll through town, a hike on a favorite local trail, a picnic in a mountain park, a shopping trip, or even a weekend sleepover. These adventures allow the dogs to relax, socialize, and display their true, uninhibited personalities in real-world environments.
The program places a special, dedicated emphasis on older dogs, larger breeds, and mixed-breed dogs, which historically spend the longest time waiting for a permanent home. Studies show that dogs participating in outdoor field trip programs experience significantly reduced stress levels and see a direct increase in adoption interest once they spend quality time with volunteers in public spaces.
To ensure success, volunteers are provided with everything needed for a safe and fun outing. Every participant receives a dedicated Trail Buddies backpack packed with treats, toys, water supplies, safety gear, and cleanup essentials. Volunteers are also encouraged to snap photos and share stories from their day out, giving potential adopters a window into each dog's unique personality.
This new community initiative is made possible through the generous sponsorship of VCA Charities, whose support helped turn the program into a reality.
