Asheville -- April 9, 2026: A Tuesday afternoon emergency response ended in a multi-vehicle collision that sent three people to the hospital and stopped downtown traffic for several hours.
The crash occurred shortly after 2 p.m. on April 8 at the intersection of Patton Avenue and Otis Street. According to the Asheville Police Department (APD), an Asheville Fire Department engine was traveling to an emergency call with its lights and sirens activated when it collided with a passenger vehicle.
Injuries and Hospital Status
Emergency crews arriving at the scene treated three individuals involved in the wreck.
Two Asheville firefighters sustained minor injuries and were transported to the hospital for evaluation. Both have since been released.
The driver of the second vehicle was transported to Mission Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and remained under medical observation as of Tuesday evening.
Traffic Gridlock and Investigation
The collision caused significant disruptions in the downtown area. APD officers were forced to shut down the eastbound lanes of Patton Avenue for approximately two hours to allow for crash reconstruction and the removal of the heavy fire apparatus. The roadway was fully reopened by 4 p.m.
The Asheville Police Department is leading the investigation into the exact cause of the crash. Investigators are reviewing traffic camera footage and witness statements to determine the sequence of events at the busy intersection.
