Since Tropical Storm Helene rearranged our landscape in 2024, the rhythmic rumble and the distant, lonesome chime of the freight train were replaced by the sounds of recovery—chainsaws, heavy machinery, and the quiet determination of a region rebuilding.
But as of Saturday, April 18, 2026, the heartbeat of the mountains is back.
This morning at 8:00 AM, the first Norfolk Southern through-freight since the storm pulled out of the Asheville yard, destined for the legendary Old Fort Loops. By the time you read this, history is quite literally chugging through our backyard.
The "Grand Opening" is Happening Now!
The celebration is centered at the Historic Old Fort Depot (25 W. Main St.), with the first train expected to roll through downtown around 10:00 AM. Local leaders, including Marion Mayor Steve Little, are on-site to witness the moment. Norfolk Southern is also on hand with giveaways and safety information. It’s a community-wide victory lap for a town that refused to stay disconnected.

The Old Fort Loops are a 13-mile engineering marvel. Built in the 1870s, the line winds like a serpent to climb over 1,000 feet in elevation.
