The old answer was always to build more multi-billion dollar traditional power plants. But this is 2026, and in North Carolina, we are starting to rely on a "quiet" revolution that uses technology many neighbors already have sitting in their garages.

It’s called a Virtual Power Plant (VPP), and it’s the most important energy topic that nobody is talking about.

Proof That It Works (From States We Know)

While this concept might seem futuristic, it is already a proven solution across the country:

  • California: In 2025, utilities successfully avoided blackouts during extreme heatwaves by tapping into over 100,000 home battery systems, saving an estimated $200 million in grid costs in the process, according to state energy officials.

  • Puerto Rico: To battle constant grid instability, the island has thousands of home battery and solar systems that, according to advocates, supplement power when the main grid falters, helping to maintain service through extreme weather.

  • Massachusetts: Here, homeowners are partners; residents who allow the utility to utilize their batteries for brief moments can earn between $1,000 and $4,000 a year, according to program details, potentially offsetting some of the initial investment.

The Status of North Carolina's VPP Pilot: PowerPair

Duke Energy is launching pieces of this new system in North Carolina, primarily through the popular PowerPair program.

  • The Carrot: This program offers substantial incentives—up to $9,000 for customers who install both solar panels and battery storage.
