WNC -- April 1, 2026: For nearly three decades, the 828 area code has been more than just a prefix for Western North Carolina (WNC); it has been a badge of regional identity. From the peaks of the Blue Ridge to the foothills of Hickory, "the 828" has defined a culture of mountain wellness, artisan craftsmanship, and rugged independence.
However, as the region’s population swells and the demand for connected devices explodes, the 828 is nearing "exhaustion." To ensure the mountains stay connected, a new era—and a new area code—is officially arriving.
A Look Back: The Birth of the 828
The 828 area code was born out of necessity on March 22, 1998. Before this, the entire western and central portions of the state shared the 704 code. As cell phones and pagers became household staples, the state was forced to split. The 704 stayed with Charlotte, while the 828 was carved out to serve 22 counties, including Buncombe, Catawba, Henderson, and Watauga.
For 28 years, the 828 stood alone as one of the few regions in North Carolina to maintain 7-digit local dialing, a rarity in an increasingly "overlayed" world.
The New Neighbor: Area Code 835
To address the looming shortage of numbers, the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA) has designated 835 as the new overlay code for the region.
How the Overlay Works:
No Number Changes: If you currently have an 828 number, you keep it. Your price for a call, coverage area, and other rates will not change.
New Assignments: Starting in August 2026, new phone lines or services may be assigned the 835 prefix.
Geographic Unity: The 835 code will serve the exact same geographic footprint as the 828, covering cities like Asheville, Hickory, Lenoir, Hendersonville, Boone, and Morganton.
The Big Shift: Mandatory 10-Digit Dialing
The most significant change for residents isn't the new code itself, but how we dial. Because the system now needs to distinguish between the 828 and 835 prefixes, 7-digit dialing is coming to an end.
The Mandatory Date: Beginning July 11, 2026, all local calls must be dialed using the full 10 digits (Area Code + Telephone Number).
The Intercept: If you forget and dial only 7 digits after this date, a recorded message will instruct you to hang up and redial using the area code.
The "988" Factor: This change also ensures that the system doesn't confuse a local 828 number beginning with "988" with the national 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
Preparation Checklist
To ensure a smooth transition before the July deadline, residents and business owners should review the following:
Automated Systems: Update life-safety systems, medical alert devices, and burglar alarms.
Digital Contacts: Update contact lists in mobile phones and "speed dial" functions on landlines.
Business Assets: Check website footers, business cards, stationery, and advertising signage.
Equipment: Ensure PBX systems, fax machines, and gate access codes are programmed for 10-digit dialing.
Maintaining the Mountain Identity
While the "828" brand is deeply embedded in WNC—celebrated annually on August 28 (8/28 Day)—local leaders emphasize that the spirit of the region remains unchanged. Whether your number starts with 828 or 835, it still represents the same community of artisans, hikers, and mountain dwellers.
