Sylva -- August 4, 2026: Authorities are asking for the public's assistance as they investigate a fatal hit-and-run that claimed the life of a Jackson County man during the early morning hours of August 2.
According to the Sylva Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 2:46 a.m. to U.S. 23 Business near 74 Sylva Plaza following reports of a vehicle striking a pedestrian.
When first responders arrived, they found James Robert Bagley III in the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering fatal injuries.
Investigators say the driver involved left the scene without stopping and has not yet been identified.
The Sylva Police Department is leading the investigation with assistance from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. Officers are also working with nearby businesses to review available surveillance footage and determine what led to the collision.
Police are encouraging anyone who may have witnessed the incident, traveled through the area around the time of the crash, or has dash camera or security camera footage to come forward.
"Someone knows something," Sylva Police Chief Aimee Sumner said. "If you have any information at all, no matter how small it may seem, please come forward and help us bring justice to Mr. Bagley's family."
The department also acknowledged the assistance provided by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Jackson County Sheriff's Office, Sylva Fire Department, and WestCare EMS during the response and investigation.
