Asheville -- February 12, 2026: A joint operation between the Asheville Police Department (APD) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) has led to the arrest of a local man following a months-long investigation into child exploitation.
The investigation began in July 2025, spearheaded by APD Computer Crimes Detectives. The case originated from "Cyber tips" funneled through the North Carolina Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, a network dedicated to tracking digital footprints of child predators.
Federal Indictment and Arrest
Working alongside HSI ICAC investigators, local detectives developed evidence that eventually crossed state lines. HSI officials in Jacksonville, Florida, secured a federal indictment against the suspect for violations involving:
Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM)
Solicitation of a minor
On February 10, 2026, APD detectives and HSI agents executed a search warrant at a residence in North Asheville. Robert Benjamin Thorpe (born 9/11/76) was taken into federal custody at the scene.
Ongoing Investigation
The Asheville Police Department expressed gratitude toward their state and federal partners for the collaborative effort required to secure the indictment and safely execute the warrant. While Thorpe is currently in custody, APD detectives noted that the investigation remains active and additional charges may be forthcoming.
