The investigation began on October 16, 2025, when investigators received a cyber tip reporting "known" child exploitation material. As members of the ICAC Task Force, the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office immediately began processing the information.
Investigators successfully traced the origin of the tip to a residence located at 156 Fairfax Drive in Ellenboro, North Carolina.
Search Warrant Execution Yields Further Evidence
Following the initial lead, investigators obtained a search warrant for the residence. On October 20, 2025, the warrant was executed, and law enforcement seized multiple electronic devices from the location.
These seized devices were submitted for forensic examination. The subsequent analysis confirmed the presence of illegal material and led to the discovery of additional illegal images classified as Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), further expanding the scope of the original cyber tip.
As a direct result of this multi-week investigation and forensic findings, warrants were issued on December 9, 2025, for John Fitzgerald Slattery.
The charges against John Fitzgerald Slattery are as follows:
10 counts of Third-Degree Sexual Exploitation of a Minor
Rutherford County Man Charged with Child Exploitation Following ICAC Investigation
