WNC News -- August 28, 2026: What began nearly two decades ago as an occasional oddity on the side of a mountain highway has officially evolved into a rapidly expanding biological shift. The nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) is no longer just passing through Western North Carolina—its numbers are climbing steadily, and breeding populations have taken root across the region.
According to documentation from the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) and regional agricultural extension services, growing populations of armadillos are now firmly established across at least eight western counties:

Cherokee
Clay
Henderson
Jackson
Macon
Swain
Transylvania
From Central America to the Southern Appalachians
The nine-banded armadillo is native to Central and South America. Its steady climb into the North Carolina mountains represents one of the fastest terrestrial range expansions of any North American mammal over the past two centuries:
1849–1850s: The species naturally crossed the Rio Grande, establishing its first documented footholds in southern Texas.
1920s–1930s: An introduced population took root in Florida, while Texas populations steadily pushed east through Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.
2007–2008: North Carolina documented its very first confirmed wild armadillo in Macon County in 2007, followed closely by Henderson County in 2008.
Present Day: What began as isolated transients has reached critical mass. Annual litters are driving rapid year-over-year population growth across the southwest mountain corridor.
Why Populations Are Multiplying in the Mountains
Armadillos possess very little body fat, no thick fur coat, and cannot hibernate. Historically, the freezing winters of the Appalachian Mountains served as a hard geographic barrier. Prolonged ground freezes prevented armadillos from digging into the topsoil for grubs, worms, and beetles, leading to starvation or hypothermia.
A combination of environmental factors is fueling their rapid expansion:
Milder Winter Temperatures: Fewer prolonged stretches of sub-freezing weather have made year-round foraging possible at higher elevations.
Deep Thermal Burrows: Below-ground tunnels stay considerably warmer than surface air, providing a safe microclimate during short cold snaps.
High Reproductive Output: Females consistently give birth to genetically identical quadruplets each year, allowing small groups to multiply rapidly once settled.
Absence of Major Predators: With large apex predators largely absent from the landscape, motor vehicles remain the primary check on their population.
The 30-Foot Tunnel Problem and Sensitive Mountain Coves
Armadillos are master excavators. While their shallow foraging creates hundreds of small cone-shaped holes in lawns and gardens, their nesting burrows present a far larger structural concern.
Extensive Burrow Systems: A single armadillo burrow can extend 25 to 30 feet underground, complete with multiple branching chambers and side tunnels.
Structural Hazards: They frequently dig along subterranean utilities, foundation footings, driveways, retaining walls, and concrete patios, which can undermine soil integrity and cause settling.
Disruption of Native Coves: Beyond residential yards, armadillos tear through delicate forest floor ecosystems. In Southern Appalachian rich cove habitats—where native wildflowers, salamanders, and ground-nesting organisms depend on undisturbed, damp leaf litter—intensive root-zone disturbance alters local biodiversity.
Health Concerns: Ticks and Disease Transmission
As armadillo numbers increase and they root through leaf litter and dense underbrush, they become prime transport hosts for ticks.
Tick-Borne Pathogens: Wildlife specialists point to tick dispersal as the primary health concern associated with growing armadillo densities, heightening local risks for Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and Alpha-gal syndrome (the red meat allergy triggered by the lone star tick).
Leprosy (Mycobacterium leprae): While armadillos are one of the few mammals capable of carrying the bacteria that causes Hansen’s disease (leprosy), health officials note that the risk of transmission to humans remains low. The NCWRC nonetheless advises wearing gloves and avoiding direct contact with live or dead animals.
Living with Armadillos: Guidance for Property Owners
Because nine-banded armadillos are classified as a nongame species in North Carolina, there is no closed hunting season or bag limit. However, handling them requires care and adherence to state wildlife laws:
Relocation is Illegal: Under North Carolina law, it is illegal to trap and relocate armadillos to another property or public land.
Targeted Fencing: Sinking wire mesh fencing 6 to 12 inches into the ground around garden beds is the most reliable physical deterrent.
Trapping Strategies: Scent-based baits rarely work on armadillos because they hunt by rooting for live soil insects. Unbaited cage traps positioned along natural travel funnels (such as against foundations or using temporary 6-foot wooden guide boards) yield the best results.
