Asheville -- June 13, 2026: The Asheville community is mourning the loss of one of its most dedicated yet unassuming benefactors. Diana Gayle Wortham passed away peacefully at her home on June 7, 2026, at the age of 82.
While her name is permanently woven into the cultural landscape of Western North Carolina, those close to her knew her as a deeply private individual who possessed a sharp, witty sense of humor and preferred to let her quiet actions do the talking.
A Patron of the Arts
In the late 1990s, Wortham’s monumental $1 million gift helped secure a permanent downtown home for what is now the Wortham Center for the Performing Arts on Biltmore Avenue. Her support transformed the Pack Square cultural staple into a thriving hub for world-class dance, theater, and music. For Wortham, the gift was never about personal recognition; it was about ensuring local and visiting artists had a place to thrive and the community had a place to gather.
Compassion Beyond the Stage
Beyond the bright lights of the theater, Wortham’s philanthropic heart extended deeply into children's causes and animal welfare. She was a continuous, often anonymous supporter of local organizations.
Her hands-on compassion was recently highlighted in a touching social media tribute by Laps and Naps Home for Senior Cats. The local rescue shared that Wortham was not only a loyal monthly donor and sanctuary supporter, but also the devoted adopter of a senior cat named Pearl. Rescue organizers fondly recalled Wortham visiting the foster home personally to meet Pearl, providing the lucky feline with a deeply cherished home where she "wanted for nothing."
A Private Farewell
Wortham is survived by her three children—Edward Allen Skeens, Diana Gayle Skeens, and Lyndall Wortham Skeens—as well as her grandchildren and a community profoundly enriched by her presence.
