Raleigh -- The familiar sequence of stop, caution, and go could soon get an upgrade, thanks to groundbreaking research from North Carolina State University (NC State) engineers.

They have proposed adding a white light to traffic signals, a revolutionary "white phase" designed to streamline traffic flow by harnessing the power of autonomous vehicles (AVs).

While the white light is currently being explored for pilot programs across the country, its innovative concept is a homegrown WNC development, pushing the envelope for the future of connected transportation.

The White Phase: A New Command

The white light would not replace the traditional colors but would act as a communication signal in a mixed traffic environment of both human-driven cars and AVs.

For Autonomous Vehicles (AVs): When enough AVs approach an intersection, they wirelessly communicate with each other and the traffic signal's computer. The system then enters the White Phase, where the AVs coordinate their movements to optimize traffic flow through the intersection in real-time.

For Human Drivers: The white light flashes on, serving as a clear indicator to the human driver to simply follow the car in front of them. If the vehicle ahead stops, you stop; if it goes, you go. This allows human drivers to seamlessly integrate into the highly efficient flow managed by the AVs.

Simulation models from the NC State team show significant potential benefits. When just 10% of vehicles are autonomous, the white phase can reduce delays by 3%. With a higher percentage of AVs, the efficiency gains soar, with some scenarios showing delays reduced by over 90%. This translates to reduced fuel consumption, lower emissions from less stop-and-go traffic, and faster travel times for everyone.

Where Will the New Light Shine First?

The white light is not yet slated for mass deployment, but its development is rapidly progressing. While the concept originated in North Carolina, the first real-world tests are likely to take place where AV density is already high, to maximize the benefits of the "white phase" coordination.

Researchers indicate that initial pilot testing is best suited for:

Controlled Environments: Small-scale physical testbeds are being set up at NC State to work out implementation challenges.

Commercial Hubs: Locations like ports are considered ideal, as they have predictable, high-volume traffic patterns and an increasing presence of autonomous commercial vehicles (AV fleets).

Although the final choice of the first implementing state is still being determined, NC State's researchers and their vision are guiding the discussion on the national level. North Carolina's transportation officials have already shown commitment to connected vehicle technology, having deployed AI-powered traffic management software at thousands of intersections, setting a progressive stage for future innovations like the white phase.
