Buncombe County -- September 29, 2026: A 60-year-old Asheville man died early Sunday morning after being struck by a vehicle on New Leicester Highway, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Troopers responded to the scene near 525 New Leicester Highway at approximately 3:30 a.m. on Sept. 28.
Investigators reported that a vehicle was traveling northwest when it struck a pedestrian who was walking in the roadway's travel lanes. Authorities identified the pedestrian as Johnny Tweed, 60, of Asheville. Tweed was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Highway Patrol confirmed that no charges will be filed in connection with the incident.
Following the collision, state troopers reminded pedestrians of key safety precautions when walking near roadways, especially at night:
Walk along the shoulder of the road facing traffic, rather than inside active travel lanes.
Wear bright, reflective clothing or carry a light source during early morning and nighttime hours to ensure visibility to passing drivers.
