McDowell County -- June 16, 2026: An Old Fort man faces multiple felony charges, including kidnapping and burglary, following a Thursday shooting incident and a brief standoff with law enforcement, according to the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office.
Richard Darrin Cody, 58, was taken into custody and initially denied bond by a judicial official.
The Incident and Arrest
The incident began on Thursday when McDowell County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) Deputy Juan Bustos responded to a residence in Old Fort regarding a weapons complaint.
The Break-In: The caller informed Deputy Bustos that Cody had fired a weapon into the building where she was sleeping.
The Forced Entry: Cody then allegedly kicked down the door to enter the dwelling before fleeing the scene on foot.
The Evidence: Deputy Bustos located bullet entry and impact points inside the residence.
Deputies located Cody a short time later. According to authorities, Cody was still carrying a firearm and initially refused to comply with lawful commands. A brief standoff ensued before Cody surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident. A subsequent investigation by detectives confirmed Cody was responsible for the shooting.
Charges Filed
Following the investigation, the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office charged Cody with the following offenses:

Felony Discharge Weapon into Occupied Property
Felony First Degree Burglary
Misdemeanor Assault by Pointing a Gun
