The operation, first confirmed for the Charlotte area, now may also target Western North Carolina, prompting a direct response from Asheville Mayor Esther Manheimer.
Governor Stein Calls for Focus on Violent Crime
Governor Josh Stein initiated the response by stating that the state's "top priority is public safety," which he defined as "fighting crime, not stoking fear or causing division."
The Governor specifically urged federal agents to focus on "arresting violent criminals and drug traffickers," noting that operations elsewhere have resulted in the detention of many individuals with "no criminal convictions," including American citizens.
In a key piece of advice for all North Carolinians, the Governor stressed the values of following the law, remaining peaceful, and standing with neighbors. He encouraged citizens to use their phones to record any inappropriate behavior and to notify local law enforcement.
Asheville Mayor Echoes Call for Calm and Community
Mayor Manheimer publicly echoed the Governor's message, stating that Asheville "may be a targeted city" for federal immigration activity. She aligned herself with the Governor's statement in support of "all of our civil rights."
“We value our strong relationships with all members of our community and remain dedicated to building trust while upholding the law. We believe every person, regardless of immigration status, should feel safe in the community they call home,” Mayor Manheimer stated.
She reinforced the separation between local and federal enforcement, confirming that Asheville Police Department (APD) officers are dedicated to maintaining public safety but, as stated by Chief Lamb, "APD does not have the authority to enforce immigration law."
Local Officials Not Participating
The deployment remains a federal operation. Both the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office in Charlotte and the Asheville Police Department have clarified that they were not requested to assist with the federal enforcement actions, underscoring the divide between local police priorities and the goals of the federal operation.
As the situation develops in both Charlotte and the WNC region, officials are focused on minimizing disruption and ensuring the rights and safety of all residents.
