After a review of the facts, authorities concluded that the deadly force used was legally justified as an act of self-defense and the defense of others inside the home.

The incident unfolded just after 6:00 p.m. when Patrol Deputies with the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) responded to a call reporting a domestic disturbance, with an additional report that a gunshot had been heard.
Upon arrival at the scene, deputies discovered William Jennings Bryan Clay III deceased.
Sheriff’s Office Statement on Self-Defense Finding
BCSO District 2 Captain Chris Stockton released a statement confirming the decision and highlighting the thoroughness of the investigation.
"This decision reflects the tireless effort of the Patrol Deputies, Detectives, and Crime Scene Investigators who worked swiftly to gather an accurate account of the events that transpired last night," Captain Stockton stated. "Our laws allow individuals to defend themselves and/or third parties when in fear of their life. This case highlights how the dedication of BCSO personnel to impartial fact-finding empowers those who act lawfully in self-defense."
Captain Stockton also acknowledged the profound impact of the event on the community members involved. "At the same time, this incident has forever changed the lives of several community members. Again, our hearts go out to them as they navigate this complex time."
