Newfound Gap Road Update: Repairs Underway, Completion Expected by September 30, 2025
Following a rockslide and washout earlier this month, construction crews are now on-site repairing US 441 in the Smokies.
Eclipse Companies, LLC is leading the project, with work slated to wrap up by September 30, 2025.
The damage—about 125 feet near mile markers 12–13—undercut the southbound lane.
On the North Carolina side (Oconaluftee ➝ Newfound Gap), the road reopened August 3, restoring access to Newfound Gap Overlook & Kuwohi.
The Tennessee side (Sugarlands ➝ Newfound Gap) will remain closed until repairs are complete.
While repairs are underway, visitors are encouraged to explore the North Carolina side of the Smokies—with open access to Kuwohi (Clingmans Dome), Deep Creek in Bryson City, the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Nantahala National Forest, the Cherohala Skyway, and more.
