Pisgah Forest -- April 30, 2026: The Pisgah Ranger District, in partnership with The Pisgah Conservancy and the Blue Ridge Parkway, has announced the commencement of the Upper Falls Connector Trail project. This new 0.9-mile trail will begin at the John Rock Overlook parking area, providing a vital new access point to the heavily visited Graveyard Fields.
Project Goals & Benefits
As one of the most popular hiking destinations in the Pisgah National Forest, Graveyard Fields often faces significant congestion during peak seasons. The new connector trail is designed to address several key needs:
Alternative Routing: Offers hikers a new way to experience the area, spreading out foot traffic.
Expanded Parking: Utilizes the John Rock Overlook to alleviate parking pressure at the main Graveyard Fields lot.
Emergency Access: Improves the ability of first responders and emergency services to access the backcountry quickly.
Future Sustainability: Enables the Forest Service and The Pisgah Conservancy to move forward with the broader Graveyard Fields Restoration Project, including stream and red spruce restoration.
Construction Impacts & Timeline
Work is scheduled to begin in May 2026 and conclude by mid-September. To ensure the safety of crews and visitors, approximately half of the John Rock Overlook parking area will be closed throughout the construction period.
Mid-May 2026: Construction begins; partial parking closure at John Rock Overlook takes effect.
Mid-June 2026: Possible 1-2 day closure of the west side of the Graveyard Fields Loop Trail.
Mid-September 2026: Project completion and full reopening.
