Rutherford County -- March 30. 2026: The North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) is currently investigating a devastating multi-vehicle collision that claimed the lives of three people on the evening of Friday, March 27, 2026.

Incident Overview

The crash occurred shortly before 6:00 p.m. on U.S. 74 near the Bostic-Sunshine Highway exit. According to preliminary reports from Highway Patrol officials, the accident involved a high-speed, head-on impact.

Initial findings suggest that a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed crossed the center median and struck another vehicle traveling in the opposite direction.

Casualties and Injuries

Troopers confirmed that three individuals were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Emergency personnel from McDowell County EMS, Rutherford County EMS, and local fire departments responded to the site.

At least one other person involved in the collision was reported to be in critical condition. The identities of the deceased have not yet been publicly released, as the NCSHP is still in the process of notifying the next of kin.

The Highway Patrol has not yet announced any charges, noting that the investigation is in its early stages. Investigators are looking into several factors, including:
