North Carolina -- June 26, 2026: As communities across North Carolina prepare to celebrate Independence Day and America's 250th anniversary, state officials are reminding residents that fireworks can quickly turn a celebration into an emergency.
North Carolina State Fire Marshal Brian Taylor is encouraging families to enjoy one of the many professionally managed fireworks displays being held across the state instead of using consumer fireworks at home.
The warning comes as portions of North Carolina continue to experience dry conditions that increase the risk of brush and structure fires. According to the Office of State Fire Marshal, even a small spark from a firework can ignite dry grass or vegetation, creating dangerous fire conditions.
"This year, the Office of State Fire Marshal is especially concerned about the increased risk of fires due to ongoing dry conditions and drought concerns across portions of North Carolina," Taylor said.
Fireworks also remain a leading cause of holiday injuries across the country each year. Burns to the hands, face, and eyes are among the most common injuries treated in emergency departments during the Independence Day holiday.
Taylor said attending community fireworks displays is the safest way to celebrate while allowing trained professionals to handle the pyrotechnics.
