The new grant program is designed to provide critical funding to internet service providers (ISPs) whose infrastructure was destroyed or damaged by the devastating storm. This effort is a key part of the state's broader recovery strategy to ensure communities can get back on their feet.
“We are working hard to rebuild western North Carolina after Hurricane Helene, and that includes making sure folks have access to high-speed internet services,” said Governor Josh Stein. “With these investments, western North Carolinians can stay connected and more easily get back on their feet – whether seeking resources, applying for a job online, starting a business, or going to school.”
Key Details of the Program
The initiative follows legislation signed by Governor Stein in August, which allocated funds specifically to restore and strengthen high-speed internet in the storm-damaged region.
Total Funding: $50 million
Purpose: Provide grants to internet service providers for the reconstruction or repair of damaged broadband infrastructure.
Priority: The program prioritizes funding for the restoration of broadband service to residents, businesses, and community institutions.
Eligibility: Internet service providers with infrastructure projects in the 39 Hurricane Helene disaster-designated counties, which includes the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, are eligible to apply.
North Carolina Department of Information Technology (NCDIT) Secretary and State Chief Information Officer Teena Piccione emphasized the essential nature of connectivity in the recovery process. “Connectivity is essential to resilience,” Piccione stated. “As we help western North Carolina recover from the devastating impacts of Hurricane Helene, restoring broadband service is critical to ensuring communities can rebuild stronger, safer, and more connected than before.”

Broadband providers may submit applications and estimated costs for the Broadband Recovery Program online by 11:59 p.m. Nov. 24 through NCDIT’s Broadband Infrastructure Office Data Exchange.
