WNC Sports -- June 7, 2026: While the professional and collegiate sports calendar takes a brief summer breather, Western North Carolina’s outdoor venues and community spaces are gearing up for a busy stretch. From local cycling meetups to massive regional youth tournaments, the mountains are coming alive with athletic energy this June.
Whether you are looking to participate, catch a game with the family, or plan out your local sports calendar, here are the key events to keep on your radar over the next few weeks.
On the Diamond: Tourists Wrap Up Home Stretch Today
For fans of traditional summer baseball, today offers your last immediate chance to catch professional action in Asheville for a little while. The Asheville Tourists are wrapping up their current home series against the Greensboro Grasshoppers this afternoon at HomeTrust Park (30 McCormick Pl, Asheville) with a 1:05 PM first pitch.
Following today’s game, the team hits the road for a multi-city away stretch. Mountain baseball fans won't have to wait too long for their return, however; the Tourists will be back in the dugout for their next homestand starting Tuesday, June 16 at 6:35 PM, when they kick off a series against the Bowling Green Hot Rods.

Community Cycling: June Foundation & Chill Rides
If you prefer two wheels to a bat and ball, next weekend features a great opportunity to get outside and connect with the local cycling community. On Saturday, June 13, IC Imagine Public Charter School in Asheville is hosting a pair of morning road rides designed to accommodate different paces and experience levels.
The event kicks off at 10:00 AM at IC Imagine K-12 Public Charter School (110 Champions Way, Asheville) before heading out to the trails at Chestnut Mountain Nature Park. Cyclists can choose between the energetic Foundation Ride or the more relaxed, social "Chill Ride." A post-ride community social will follow at Wicked Weed West in Candler.
Mark Your Calendar: High-Energy Tournaments Coming Up
Looking slightly further ahead into late June, two major regional draws will bring hundreds of athletes and families into Buncombe County's premiere outdoor facilities. These are excellent spots to watch high-level youth athletics right in our backyard:
Carpetbagger Lacrosse Boys Summer Classic (June 20–21): This massive, multi-state youth lacrosse tournament begins match play daily at 8:00 AM. The action will take over the fields at two major local venues: the Buncombe County Sports Park (58 Apac Dr, Asheville) and the John B. Lewis (JBL) Soccer Complex (439 Azalea Rd, Asheville). Expect high energy and plenty of fast-paced competition over the weekend.
Asheville Tennis Open Juniors (June 24–26): The historic clay courts at the Aston Park Tennis Center (336 Hilliard Ave, Asheville) will host the junior brackets for the 94th annual Asheville Open Tennis Championships. Sanctioned matches run throughout the day, providing a wonderful opportunity to see the region's rising tennis talent compete on a classic surface right in downtown Asheville.
