McDowell County -- January 23, 2026: Two Morganton residents face felony charges following an alleged break-in at a damaged assisted living facility in McDowell County.

The McDowell County Sheriff's Office responded to a call from the facility owner and found the two individuals exiting the building. The pair, identified as Gage and Karen Marcus, are now facing charges related to the incident.

On Tuesday, January 13, the owner of a local assisted living facility called into the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office to report a breaking-and-entering. The facility has been closed due to damage from Hurricane Helene.

Both received secured bonds in the amount of $7,500.

Suspect is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
