McDowell Man Charged After Assaulting Female & Injuring Officer

A Marion man faces felony charges after allegedly assaulting a woman and injuring a law enforcement officer in Old Fort. The incident occurred during a domestic violence call, highlighting the serious risks faced by officers responding to such situations.

Christopher Robert McKinney of Marion was charged after the alleged assault. Lieutenant Gioia Holland sustained serious injuries during the incident.

McDowell County Sheriff's Office News Release:

Deputy Caleb Baliles with the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office charged 49-year-old Christopher Robert McKinney of Marion with felony Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer Inflicting Serious Injury; misdemeanor Assault on a Female and misdemeanor Resisting a Public Officer. He was initially denied bond due to the incident being domestic violence-related.

On March 4, Lieutenant Gioia Holland responded to a domestic violence call at a residence in Old Fort. While on scene, McKinney became physically combative toward Lt. Holland when she attempted to place him under arrest for assaulting a female at the home.

Responding deputies and Lt. Holland placed McKinney under arrest. Lt. Holland was then transported to The McDowell Hospital where she was treated for her injuries and release
