McDowell County -- July 28, 2025 A Nebo resident faces a felony charge following an investigation into child neglect initiated by local authorities last month.
The McDowell County Sheriff’s Office arrested 44-year-old Elvia Stamey on July 23. She has been charged with felony Exposing a Child to a Controlled Substance.

Initial Referral: On June 16, Detective Billie Brown received a report from the McDowell County Department of Social Services regarding allegations of child neglect involving a juvenile under Stamey's care.
Findings: An investigation conducted by Det. Brown confirmed the allegations. Medical screening revealed that the child tested positive for narcotics.
Arrest and Custody: Investigators executed the arrest on July 23. Stamey was placed under a $75,000 secured bond.
