McDowell County -- McDowell County Sheriff's Office News Release: June 1, 2026: An investigation into a Marion couple, following a DSS referral in April, has led to felony charges against 24-year-old Austin McClain and 26-year-old Malik Monta McClain.
Both were charged with four counts each of Exposing a Child to a Controlled Substance and misdemeanor Child Abuse. They were each issued a $300,000 secured bond.

The investigation began after a toddler in their care was found with markings consistent with abuse. The toddler was removed from the home along with three other children in the couple’s care. Additionally, all four children tested positive for methamphetamine and marijuana.
This investigation is ongoing.
