Chimney Rock Village -- April 18, 2026: As Western North Carolina enters its first full spring season since Helene, Chimney Rock Village is showing the world what a "revival" looks like. In his Spring 2026 update, Mayor Peter O’Leary detailed a community that is not just cleaning up, but actively "Raising the Rock."
Federal Attention & Infrastructure Wins
The Village’s recovery efforts received a national spotlight on April 7, 2026, when Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin visited Chimney Rock. The visit highlighted the ongoing importance of recovery support for Chimney Rock at both the federal and state levels.
Travelers also have a much easier path to the Village now. The reopening of US 64 from Bat Cave on March 28 has finally reconnected Chimney Rock to major hubs like Hendersonville and Asheville, bringing back the "day-tripper" traffic essential for local shops.
The "Raise the Rock" Vision
The recovery isn't just about restoring what was lost; it’s about a more resilient future.
McGill Engineering is currently leading the initial work on streetscape repairs.
Funding: The plan is bolstered by $5.5 million in NC Commerce grants and a $1.7 million NCDOT carbon reduction grant.
Riverfront Progress: Groups like Spokes of Hope, the Amish community, and Precision Grading & Disaster Relief continue to work tirelessly alongside property owners to stabilize the riverbanks.
The Business Boom
While business is at roughly 50% of its pre-flood volume, the momentum is undeniable. Out of the 44 businesses that were damaged or destroyed, 25 are now open. Nine more are slated to join them this year, including:
Whistle Hop Brewing Company: The Village's newest member, filling the void left by lost riverside taprooms.
The Hickory Nut: Returning in a brand-new building.
Bubba O’Leary’s General Store: Reopening with a new addition.
Spring Tourism: What’s Open?

Lake Lure began refilling in February and is approaching full pond, with hopes for a full public reopening by Memorial Day.
Chimney Rock State Park is open, including the new Boulder’s Trail extension.
Parking Update: Visitors are reminded that parking fees are a direct contribution to the Village’s rebuilding fund.
