North Carolina -- May 31, 2026: A massive, multi-agency manhunt is actively stretching across the North Carolina-Virginia state line as law enforcement agencies coordinate operations throughout Surry County and surrounding areas. Authorities are searching for Michael Timothy Puckett, the suspect accused of killing one deputy and wounding another during a Friday night welfare check just miles from the county line.

The U.S. Marshals Service has issued a $10,000 reward for information leading to the capture of Puckett, warning that the fugitive is an "explosive expert" with a long history of violent offenses.

The Incident: A Welfare Check Turns Deadly

The violence erupted around 9:26 PM on Friday, May 29, when the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office in Virginia responded to a request from a family member to check on a resident at 13658 Fancy Gap Highway. The location sits roughly 13 miles north of the North Carolina state line.

Upon arrival, two deputies made contact with Puckett, who immediately opened fire. A gun battle ensued as deputies returned fire.

  • The Casualties: Deputy Logan Utt, a military veteran who joined the force in 2023, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The second responding deputy survived the encounter, saved by a ballistic vest that absorbed the impact of the gunfire. That deputy remains in stable condition.

  • The Flight: Puckett managed to flee the scene immediately following the shootout and has remained at large since Friday night.

  • The Manhunt Focuses on Surry County

Because the shooting occurred so close to the state line, law enforcement agencies in Western North Carolina’s foothills went on high alert. The Surry County Sheriff’s Office and the Mount Airy Police Department immediately deployed assets to assist Virginia state troopers, the FBI, the ATF, and federal marshals.

The search intensified over the weekend following reports that Puckett may have been spotted via a wildlife camera in Surry County. Massive grids of the rural landscape are being combed by K-9 units and tactical teams.

Puckett’s deep ties to the area have made the search highly localized. Federal wanted posters indicate he frequently operates in the Cana and Ararat areas of Virginia, and court records reveal a criminal history in Mount Airy dating back to 2015.

Suspect’s Violent History with Explosives

Court records obtained over the weekend paint a highly volatile profile of the fugitive. Puckett was already awaiting trial in Patrick County, Virginia, on a slate of severe felony charges stemming from a July 2023 incident, including:

  • Arson

  • Possession or manufacture of a fire bomb

  • Possession of explosives by a convicted felon

Furthermore, a review of his record indicates a 2016 conviction for the illegal possession of a sawed-off shotgun, altering a firearm's serial number, and multiple explosives-related offenses. The U.S. Marshals Service emphasized these "violent tendencies" in their urgent public alerts. Puckett has distinct tattoos on both arms and his neck.

A Double Loss for the Community

The tragedy has hit the regional emergency response community exceptionally hard. In addition to his law enforcement service in Virginia, Deputy Logan Utt served the region as a firefighter with the Mount Airy Fire Department in Surry County, North Carolina.

"Today, Carroll County has lost a hero, and a family has suffered an unimaginable loss," Carroll County Sheriff Kevin Kemp said in a statement. Utt leaves behind a wife and children.

URGENT SAFETY NOTICE: Law enforcement officials emphasize that Michael Timothy Puckett must be considered armed and extremely dangerous. Residents throughout Surry County and the surrounding state line communities are urged to lock their doors, secure external properties, and remain highly vigilant. If you spot anyone matching Puckett's description, do not approach him under any circumstances. Call 911 immediately.
