The Incident: A Welfare Check Turns Deadly
The violence erupted around 9:26 PM on Friday, May 29, when the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office in Virginia responded to a request from a family member to check on a resident at 13658 Fancy Gap Highway. The location sits roughly 13 miles north of the North Carolina state line.
Upon arrival, two deputies made contact with Puckett, who immediately opened fire. A gun battle ensued as deputies returned fire.
The Casualties: Deputy Logan Utt, a military veteran who joined the force in 2023, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The second responding deputy survived the encounter, saved by a ballistic vest that absorbed the impact of the gunfire. That deputy remains in stable condition.
The Flight: Puckett managed to flee the scene immediately following the shootout and has remained at large since Friday night.
