Man Sentenced to Probation in July Now Faces Major Drug Trafficking Charges in Macon County

Macon County -- October 3, 2025: A Franklin man, Austen Jeffrey Caiata, who had recently been sentenced to supervised probation following a July guilty plea, is now facing a substantial list of new charges, including multiple counts of drug trafficking, following an investigation by the Macon County Sheriff’s Office.

Traffic Stop Triggers Escalating Investigation

The series of events began on October 1, when a Macon County Sheriff’s Office deputy conducted a routine traffic stop. The driver was identified as Austen Jeffrey Caiata. A search of the vehicle yielded a quantity of suspected methamphetamine.

The investigation escalated significantly while Caiata was being booked into the Macon County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center. A search of his person revealed a concealed compartment in the zipper area of his pants, which contained a trafficking quantity of suspected fentanyl.

This critical seizure led investigators to obtain a search warrant for Caiata’s residence. Executed in the early morning hours of October 2, the search of the home resulted in the seizure of even larger trafficking amounts of fentanyl, along with various pills, methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia. The overall investigation has led to a total seizure of 48 grams of suspected fentanyl.

Extensive Charges Filed

Caiata’s latest run-in with the law comes just over two months after he pled guilty on July 29, 2025, to possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of five or more counterfeit instruments, and was subsequently sentenced to supervised probation.

He now faces the following new charges:

POSSESS METHAMPHETAMINE

POSSESS CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE PRISON/JAIL PREMISSES
