Buncombe County -- July 3, 2026: A fatal house fire in the Riceville community of Buncombe County is now the focus of an active homicide investigation after preliminary autopsy findings prompted investigators to reclassify the case.
According to the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded around 6:20 a.m. on Tuesday, June 30, to a residence at 84 E. Mountain Way after firefighters with the Riceville Fire Department discovered a deceased man while responding to a structure fire.
Detectives and crime scene investigators were called to the home to begin processing the scene and interviewing witnesses. Initially investigated as a fatal fire, the case took a significant turn after preliminary autopsy results were received.
On July 2, the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office announced that the death had officially been classified as a homicide based on findings from the preliminary autopsy. Authorities have not released the victim's identity, pending notification of next of kin and confirmation through the investigation.
Investigators have also declined to release the victim's cause of death or additional details surrounding the circumstances, citing the active and ongoing nature of the criminal investigation.
At this time, no arrests have been announced, and investigators have not identified any suspects or released information regarding a possible motive. Officials have stated there is no known threat to the public related to the investigation.
