Macon County -- April 5, 2026: The Macon County Sheriff's Office posted the following scam alert yesterday:

Heads up, Macon County — this is a scam.

We’ve had a few folks ask about this “Final Notice – Court Enforcement Action” that’s been going around, and I want to be clear with you:

This is NOT from any legitimate court or law enforcement agency.

If you take a close look, there are a couple things that just don’t add up:

• It tries to scare you with “final notice” language and threats of suspension right out of the gate

• It tells you to scan a QR code to pay — that’s not how courts collect money

• It throws in a bunch of official-sounding laws that don’t really match up

• It lists a Wake County court date, even if you’ve never had business there

Bottom line — it’s designed to make you panic and pay before you think twice.

We get it… anything with “court” on it can make your stomach drop a little. That’s exactly what they’re counting on.

Please don’t scan the code, don’t send money, and don’t give out your information.

If you ever get something like this and aren’t sure, pick up the phone and call us or the Clerk of Court. We’d much rather answer a quick question than see someone get taken advantage of.

We’re seeing more of these pop up, so help us spread the word and check on family members or neighbors who might not recognize it right away.

Stay safe out there, and as always — we’ve got your back.
