Buncombe County -- May 15, 2026: Devan Oneal Loving, 28, is being held without bond at the Buncombe County Detention Facility following his extradition from Tennessee. Loving faces three counts of first-degree murder, one count of conspiracy to commit murder, and one count of abduction of a child in connection with a triple homicide in Fairview.
Buncombe County Assistant District Attorney Amy Buchanan said, “Your Honor, the co-defendant (Star Grant) and Mr. Loving did shoot, then stab all three individuals. They then took their wallets, as well as a firearm, and fled the state. They were found days later in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. And after they were found, they both did speak with law enforcement, and did admit to their involvement in the murders.”
The charges stem from an incident on Thursday, May 7, 2026, when Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a welfare check at 18 Ashworth Drive in Fairview. Inside the home, authorities discovered three deceased victims: Kimberly Michelle Grant, 42, Travis Eugene Grant, 41, and Sharon Grant, 66. All three victims were found with gunshot wounds. Investigators quickly determined that 16-year-old Star Grant, who resided at the address, was missing.
A multi-agency search led authorities to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, where Loving and Star Grant were located and taken into custody at a Motel 6 on Friday, May 8, 2026. Loving was initially held on a kidnapping/abduction of a juvenile warrant and a fugitive from justice charge. He appeared in Sevier County, Tennessee, court on Monday, May 11, 2026, where he was ordered held without bond pending extradition to North Carolina.
Upon his return to Buncombe County, Loving was formally booked on the North Carolina charges and ordered held without bond. His co-defendant, Star Grant, 16, also faces three counts of first-degree murder and one count of felony conspiracy to commit murder, and is being charged as an adult. During Grant’s first court appearance on May 14, 2026, prosecutors detailed that the victims were first shot and then stabbed. Prosecutors also stated that both Grant and Loving later provided statements indicating culpability in the homicides.
