Large Mulch Yard Fire Continues in Mills River, Crews Work Around the Clock on Containment

Mills River -- October 5, 2025: Mills River Fire and Rescue crews have been working through the night to contain a large, persistent fire at a local mulch facility, located near Boylston Highway and Old Haywood Road in Mills River, NC.

The fire was first reported on social media at 9:17 PM Saturday night (October 4, 2025), when the Mills River Fire and Rescue initially posted that crews were working to contain the blaze.

Current Status and Containment Focus

In a Sunday morning update, the fire department advised that the operation has shifted from a quick extinguishment effort to a sustained containment effort. The mulch fire is burning "from the inside out," which makes it impossible to fully extinguish in a short period of time.

Crews are currently working around the clock with the primary goal of keeping the fire contained and preventing its spread to nearby properties.

Public Impact and Hazard Advisory

Mills River Fire and Rescue cautions residents and drivers to expect the following conditions for an extended period:

Heavy Smoke: You will continue to see smoke and smell odors for an extended amount of time.

Emergency Presence: Emergency services personnel will remain on-site around the clock.
