Town of Lake Lure --Following a 20-month closure that began when Hurricane Helene fundamentally altered the landscape of Hickory Nut Gorge, Lake Lure is welcoming back the public for a monumental Memorial Day weekend. The holiday features the grand reopening of the historic town beach, signaling a major economic and emotional milestone for the tourism-dependent community.
The lake had been strictly closed to the public since the late 2024 storm while the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, FEMA, and local crews worked to remove more than 1.1 million tons of silt, sand, and debris washed down by the Rocky Broad River. On May 15, 2026, Governor Josh Stein and Lake Lure Mayor Carol Pritchett gathered under the Morse Park gazebo to officially declare the waters clear, safe, and open—beating original holiday timelines by opening public boat ramps a week early.
“Today is more than the reopening of a lake — it is the restoration of a place that brings our community together,” Mayor Pritchett stated. “We knew we had to prioritize the needs that would most directly impact our residents' livelihoods and support the economic vitality of our county and state.”
While some long-term infrastructure recovery continues—such as finalizing permanent stationary marina docks and replacing the main fuel pumps—the public boat ramps at Washburn Marina and Pool Creek are fully operational, and a dense schedule of holiday events is set to bring life back to the waterfront.

Friday, May 22: The Summer Kickoff
Beachside Cookout & Marshmallow Roast: Hosted at Rumbling Bald on Lake Lure, featuring local food and community bonfires from 11:00 AM to sunset.
Music & Mallows (6:00 PM – 9:00 PM): Live performance by Adrianne Blanks and the Oracles lakeside at Rumbling Bald.
Saturday, May 23: Grand Reopening Celebration
Lake Lure Beach Grand Reopening (12:00 PM – 9:30 PM): The town’s official community welcome-back celebration at the historic Lake Lure Beach (2771 Memorial Highway). Admission is $15 and features live music, family games, local food and drink vendors, and a major evening fireworks display over the water to cap off the resurrection of the waterfront.
Sunday, May 24: Family Fun Day
Poolside Trivia & Movie on the Green (3:00 PM / 8:30 PM): Rumbling Bald hosts afternoon poolside games, followed by a family sunset movie screening of Wicked on the Bald Mountain driving range.
Monday, May 25: Remembrance & Honor
Annual Memorial Day Program (9:00 AM): The Town of Lake Lure will hold its formal memorial service at the Lake Lure Veterans Memorial, located directly across from the beach between the Lake Lure Inn and the Arcade Building.
Details: Attendees are encouraged to arrive by 8:45 AM. The ceremony features a formal posting of colors by the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Honor Guard, patriotic music, and regional guest speakers.
Rain Plan: In case of inclement weather, the program moves inside to Roosevelt Hall at the 1927 Lake Lure Inn.
Hospitality: The historic 1927 Lake Lure Inn and Spa will host a complimentary continental breakfast for all attendees immediately following the service.
Red, White, & Blue Golf Tournament (9:00 AM): A shotgun start tournament at the Apple Valley golf course for resort members and lodging guests.
What Visitors and Boaters Need to Know
If you are planning to head down to the gorge this weekend, town officials advise keeping a few logistics in mind:
Fuel Up Before Arrival: Because the marina's permanent fuel pumps are still undergoing final repairs, boaters must fill up their gas tanks at land stations before arriving at the ramps.
No Wake Regulations: Under the current phase of the reopening, all boat traffic on the lake must strictly adhere to "no wake zone" regulations as crews continue to monitor the waters. Boaters and swimmers are urged to exercise caution.
Parking Access: Public parking is open near the beach, Morse Park, and the Arcade Building. Space is expected to fill quickly, so early arrival is highly recommended.
Pet Policy: While the beach area is transitioning back to normal, pets should be left at home for Monday morning's solemn Memorial Day service due to expected crowds and the formal nature of the program.
