Black Mountain -- July 3, 2026: The Black Mountain Police Department is praising the courage and quick actions of citizens after an armed incident at the Trailhead Restaurant on July 2, 2026, ended without serious injuries or loss of life.
According to police, officers responded to the restaurant at approximately 5:37 p.m. after receiving reports that Charles Donald Wilson, 76, had returned to the business following an earlier disturbance.
Police said Wilson had reportedly been asked to leave the restaurant earlier in the day after making inappropriate and disparaging comments toward an employee. During that incident, authorities allege Wilson made statements indicating he would return with a firearm and harm individuals inside the restaurant.
According to investigators, Wilson later returned to the restaurant while armed. Police say he entered the establishment and allegedly made actions and statements that caused immediate concern for the safety of customers, employees, and others inside.
Before officers arrived, several citizens acted quickly to intervene, restraining Wilson until law enforcement officers reached the scene and secured the situation.
Wilson was taken into custody without further incident and transported to the Buncombe County Detention Facility. He was charged with Going Armed to the Terror of the Public, Brandishing a Firearm, and Intoxicated and Disruptive Behavior.
The Black Mountain Police Department praised the actions of those who stepped forward during the dangerous situation.
"The actions displayed by members of our community exemplified extraordinary courage and selflessness under difficult circumstances," the department said. "While incidents of this nature are extremely rare in Black Mountain, they are inherently dangerous and unpredictable. The calm actions and assistance provided by citizens on scene contributed to bringing this event to a safe resolution."
Police also expressed appreciation for everyone affected by the incident.
"The Black Mountain Police Department would like to express sincere appreciation and recognition to the citizens, patrons, staff members, and everyone involved for their cooperation, patience, and concern for one another during an extremely tense and rapidly evolving situation."
The department said it is thankful the incident ended without serious injury or loss of life.
"We are exceptionally grateful that this incident ended without serious injury or loss of life. The safety of our community remains our highest priority, and we are proud to serve a community that consistently demonstrates strength, resilience, and a willingness to look out for one another."
The Black Mountain Police Department also thanked responding personnel and everyone impacted for their patience while officers secured the scene and ensured public safety.
