Demolition is underway at the Ingles Markets location in Swannanoa, N.C., following extensive damage caused by Hurricane Helene in September 2024. The demolition marks a significant step in the aftermath of the storm, impacting local shoppers who relied on the store.
Crews are removing the gas station, strip buildings, and other damaged structures on U.S. Highway 70. The strip buildings formerly housed a post office and Ace Hardware. The demolition clears the way for a new, larger Ingles store.
Future Plans
Plans propose a 95,391-square-foot replacement for the original 65,542-square-foot store at 2317 U.S. 70. The new development is slated to include a gas station, car wash, over 650 parking spaces, and three additional retail spaces adjoining the main store. The Buncombe County Board of Adjustment approved a Special Use Permit for the main store on October 8. Construction awaits final permits, and start or opening dates are not yet confirmed.
Ingles plans to expand employment from 140 to between 200 and 220 workers. The design of the new store will resemble the original but on a larger scale.
