While hospitals are seeing a rise in multiple respiratory threats, the aggressive "sudden onset" of Influenza A is the primary driver behind new protocols designed to protect patients and staff.
Recognizing Influenza A: The "Red Flags"
Health officials are urging the public to distinguish between a minor cold and the current Influenza A strain. Recognizing these symptoms early can help you decide when to seek treatment and when to avoid visiting local medical facilities.
Sudden Onset: Unlike a cold that builds over days, Influenza A hits quickly, often causing a person to feel fine in the morning and severely ill by the afternoon.
High Fever: Temperatures often spike abruptly above 101°F, typically accompanied by intense chills.
Extreme Fatigue: A level of exhaustion that can make simple movement feel difficult.
Severe Body Aches: Deep muscle and joint pain that is far more intense than standard cold symptoms.
Persistent Cough: A dry, painful cough often follows the initial fever and can last for several weeks.
Regional Hospital Restriction Status (As of Dec 30, 2025)
Policies are currently fragmented across the mountains. If you plan to visit a patient, please note the following current statuses:
UNC Health Pardee (Hendersonville): Now restricting visitors to those 11 years of age and older. A limit of two visitors per patient is also in effect.
AdventHealth (Hendersonville): Effective immediately, no visitors under the age of 18 are permitted. Masks are required for those visiting respiratory units.
Novant Health (Regional): Restrictions are in place for all North Carolina facilities; visitors must be 13 or older and are limited to two healthy adults per patient.
Mission Health (Asheville & Affiliates): No formal restrictions are in place as of this morning. Officials are "monitoring daily data" but have not yet triggered an age-based ban.
Haywood & Harris Regional: Operating under seasonal precautions. While open, they strongly discourage visitors with any symptoms and suggest children under 12 stay home.
Community Safety and Treatment
If you suspect you have contracted the virus, early intervention is key. Antiviral treatments like Tamiflu are most effective when started within the first 48 hours of that first symptom.
Regardless of a specific hospital's policy, health experts ask that you:
Stay home if you have any respiratory symptoms, even mild ones.
Mask up when entering any healthcare environment.
Practice hand hygiene frequently to slow the local spread.
